Which content management system suits your website..?
So, you’re thinking of getting a new website developed for your Scout Group, District, County, Region or Campsite / Activity Centre? One of the first things you’ll need to choose, alongside a domain name for it to use, is the content management system you’d like it to run on!
First things first: what is a content management system?
A content management system is an online website application that makes it super-easy for a user without development / coding knowledge to add, edit and manage a website and it’s content. Referred to as a CMS, nearly all websites are now using one as they make updating and managing a website so much easier, even for someone with no technical or design knowledge.
There are a huge variety of CMSs out there. These range from Microsoft based complex ASP.NET systems such as Umbraco, to PHP based systems such as Joomla, Drupal and WordPress. If you’re stuck and would like some advice, our team of developers work with them all so we’ll happily let you know what we think best suits your requirements.

In order to choose a CMS that suits your new website best, you’ll need an idea of how you’d like the website to function and any complex things you’d like it to be able to do. The CMSs mentioned above are generally used for content-based websites (those without huge e-commerce functionality or bespoke functionality like Twitter or Facebook). These systems all work in similar ways and allow a user to edit practically everything on the website, providing it’s been developed well.
If we had to pick a favourite (we might be pretty biased), we’d say WordPress. Most of our sites are built in WordPress and the reasoning for this is down to the flexibility behind it, which allows both developer and editor to do almost anything they want. The amount of support on the internet is huge, so if you’re ever stuck, a quick Google will reveal that someone else has had exactly the same problem before! Not only this, but 20% of all websites on the internet are powered by WordPress – impressive!
Here are a few things that you can do with a WordPress website developed by us:
Create, edit and delete pages easily
Manage navigation menus using a drag-and-drop tool
Create multiple users with different privileges – great if you’d like Young Leaders to help out
Upload images, videos and documents to the media gallery, to use anywhere on your website
Add news, events, gallery photos and other items in just a few quick clicks
Optimise the website for search engines using page titles and meta descriptions
Log in from your smart phone or tablet using the WordPress app and upload content when you’re out and about

Our HQ overlooking Albert Dock in Liverpool has a full-time team of 12 designers, developers and project managers. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
Scout Websites were really responsive to our requirements and kept going until it was all how we wanted it. We were merging our old websites onto one new one and they made sure every step worked. Scout Websites provided an eye-catching template with useful functions. In our first week live we had 6 join enquiries. Leaders are saying it’s much better. It’s now something that reflects us and our Scouting. Highly recommended.
